Oh I Hate Politics...

I swear this will be the first and last time I will bring this subject to this blog. I was trying hard to keep things happy and positive but today I just can't.

I know this will be a bit hard to read, but please, just bear with me!

Last weekend was very, VERY intense for us, Brazilians.
On Sunday, October 26, 2014 was the second round of elections in Brazil.

I was never so involved with politics as I was this year. First because it was elections here in Winnipeg too and most of what we talked about in Journalism was about the elections and how to cover it. NOT BEING BIASED.

This election literally divided the country. 50% os the people wanted some change, 50% thought Dilma's government was doing great and we didn't need to change anything.

Even though I don't live there anymore, it doesn't mean I don't care. I care (and this was the first year I really cared about the elections).

Everything I learned in the last couple of months in my Journalism classes made me think more critically about what the media tells us and made me take people's opinions with other perspectives.

Not only the results made me feel really sad about my country, but what people were doing and saying before and after and I realized that some shouldn't be allowed to talk about politics at all.

It was a very stressful weekend for all of us, but I have never seen so much hate, intolerance and hypocrisy as I saw this past month.
I admit that in the beginning I was intolerant too. I was angry to see that people refused to open their eyes and to think outside the box. Some people think is just easier to believe everything media outlets tell us. If there is one thing I am ashamed of journalism in Brazil is that most of them are COMPLETELY biased. COMPLETELY.

But back with the hate and intolerance subject.
I just wanted to bring that up to justify why I hate politics so much. It brings the worst in people.
It came to a point when ALL my Facebook feed was about the elections and how much people who voted for Aécio hated the people who voted for Dilma, and vice-versa. It was too much intolerance and hate. People were preaching about tolerance and NOT BEING TOLERANT.
Some even compared Jesus Christ, a sacred person, with Dilma's government. That was just too much for me to bear.

Seeing all that hate, intolerance and hypocrisy made me realize WHY we have so many problems. It's Government's fault but is also our nation's fault.

I just hope one day things will get better. People will open their eyes and become less self-centred. They say they care about others, but what they really care about is themselves.

This is why I rather read about arts, fashion, photography, food, traveling, etc. They make me happy and when I am feeling hopeless, they really help a lot to ease my mind.

This is my outpour for today.

See ya next week!

Some inspiration for the week

What really makes you happy?

Have you ever seen an image and thought: "Oh, that's something I want to try!"

I love pictures. Since I can remember I remember my dad would ALWAYS carry around his old-fashioned Pentax camera. We have so many pictures at my house because he was always taking pictures of us and everything we did. So I grew up with a little of photography in my veins.

I think I already mentioned this, but I'm loving my media productions class. Even though we are learning how to shoot videos properly, it helps a lot when it comes to shoot pictures. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to practice this week yet :(

My dad always took portraits of us, but I love looking at pictures of things, such as food, landscapes, animals, etc.
The one thing I love about pictures is that it inspires you! Every time I see a picture well taken I smile. I can't help it.

Pictures make me happy, inspiring pictures make me happier. They give me something to be excited for and ideas to escape from the ordinary life.

I compiled some pictures that relate and inspire me!

Needless to say that Pinterest is my main inspiration source, right? Pinterest is just the best. But I also like to go on Tumblr and We Heart It. I also like reading Refinery29 and Hypeness (is from Brazil, but I'm pretty sure you can ask google to translate it to portuguese), both websites are great! Leaf is a YouTube channel that has short videos with diy tutorials, recipes, and tips to have an inspiring life!

Let's talk about technologies, shall we?

I have been surrounded by a lot of technology lately.

I have to admit that when I got a letter from Red River College saying that I had to buy a MacBook Pro I was really happy!

I'm loving it! I had worked with iMac before and in my opinion it was the best computer to design! As a designer, I have learned that a high quality screen is super important, and that is one thing Apple knows how to do!

My MacBook has been my best friend. Everywhere I go I carry it with me. Day after day I'm becoming more dependent of it. It might not be a good thing, but I love it.

Say what you want, but I love Apple. They are genius. They get everyone to buy their products, they get everyone to need it. Even if some people think it's devious, I think it's genius.

The good news is that Apple just launched a new display for the iMac. The 5K Retina display has 14.7 million pixels, four times as many pixels as the regular display has. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Apple said they did the impossible developing this display that has a better quality and reduces energy consumption while maintaining their high quality standard for brightness, which I love.

If you want to find out more about the new iMac 5K Retina Display, click here.

I hate looking at people's phone when they don't use the brightness at its maximum. Even though I have to charge my phone up to 3 times a day, I love how bright and neat it looks.

I am always on my phone. And the good thing is that my phone syncs with my computer and vice versa. So I have everything I need all the time.

Among all these technologies that I carry around every day, there is one essential thing that I can't survive with. A toque, as Canadians call it.
I promise you, without it, I wouldn't be alive today. hahaha
Here in Winnipeg is so windy! If I leave my house without it, I freeze.

So every time you see me, that's how I'll be looking like: holding my computer with my left arm, my phone in my right hand, my headphones, and a toque.

See you next week! :)

Alone vs. Lonely

This past week my CreComm class was assigned to teach our classmates how to use properly some of the words that are commonly mistaken. I was assigned with "I and me". But today I want to share with you two other words I personally was misusing.

Alone and Lonely.

Below you can check the dictionary definition of both.

Alone [uh-lohn]: Adjective and adverb: Separate, apart, or isolated from others. To the exclusion of all others. Unique; unequaled; unexcelled.

Lonely [lohn-lee]: Adjective: affected with, characterized by, or causing a depressing feeling of being alone; lonesome. Destitute of sympathetic or friendly companionship, intercourse, support, etc.

But do you wanna know what these two words mean to me?

Last Wednesday my mom went back to Brazil. After spending 45 days with her here in Winnipeg, finding myself alone in my apartment was kind of scary.

This is not the first time I had to stay away from my family and friends, but this is the first time I am alone. By myself.

After dropping her off at the airport I went to work. I got home at 10:30 p.m. and the silence was the worst noise I had ever heard, but the attempt of avoiding the thought of it was impossible.

Living alone has thought me lots of things. I don't like being alone but I can surely say it's good for yourself.
First, I'm getting to know myself better. What are my needs, what are my boundaries, what I really like to do.

Second, when you're alone it's very easy to postpone things. You don't have anyone else to base your schedule on. It's your responsibility to take care of your own plans and manage your time, which you realize you have lots when you're alone.

But please, don't get me wrong. Although I'm alone, I'm not lonely.

My family calls me everyday to check on me and my Brazilian neighbours and friends are great! We always share things and experiences with each other, and we make sure we are all doing fine! I was so blessed for meeting these people. This is the best way for not missing Brazil and seeing that what I am going through is normal, because honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm about to freak out.

I'm not under pressure, but I don't want to do anything wrong. I want to get the best out of me and make this experience a successful one. It demands a lot of discipline and patience. It's good to have people around you that understand what you're going through. If I didn't have them with me, that would be my definition of lonely.

Also, I was blessed to be in Section 2. Really, our class is very friendly! I don't know if it's because we are in CreComm, but we talk a lot! hahaha We are very supportive to each other! #S24L

But the good news is that on tuesday I'll have a little visit from my dad! He'll spend ten days here in Winnipeg with me! :D I'm super excited for him to come! Can't wait!

Do you have any words that may be commonly misused but their meaning is important to you? Share it with me on the comments! :)

Kawaii Crepe

Remember how I told you guys on my last post that last week was super nice? today is COLD. that's how fast Winnipeg can change its mind. haha, but that doesn't really matter right now.

Last Saturday I had dinner with my friend at Kawaii Crepe. SO GOOD. OMG. That is so good. The right amount of carbs and protein and everything that is good for you, just that it isn't. hahaha anyways, it's good food.

It's about three blocks away from where I live so I got really excited. I found it hard to find a place that has "fast-food" that is not bad fast-food like McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King, because honestly, except for Wendy's, where I eat a few times a year, I totally dislike fast-food. Every time you go out with friends you go to restaurants, but sometimes I just don't feel like waiting for a table, and spending too much money for it.

The Kawaii Crepe branch I've been is located at Osborne Street a.k.a Osborne Village, a vintage area of Winnipeg, I would say. I'm in love with that area and all their local shops. I hope to be able to explore more, because lately I haven't had a lot of time to do so.

The Osborne Village is one of the historical parts of the city and they preserved the old architectural characteristics, so it's a mix of modern and minimalist with Art Deco.

If you would like to find more about the Osborne Village you can click here.

Have a great weekend!
